Usher Dazzles On The VMA Stage With 'DJ' And 'OMG'

Ush combined his legendary dance skills with spectacular special effects.
By Rochell D. Thomas

Call it what you will: talent, swag, skills. But one thing's true about Usher Terry Raymond IV: When he steps on the dance floor, some mysterious thing comes out of him and puts the G in groove. After he was tapped to perform at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, executive producer Dave Sirulnick challenged Usher to "show why you're king," and the 31-year-old Grammy winner didn't disappoint.

As predicted by the lucky few who got a peek at Thursday's practice performance for his hit "OMG," Ush pulled off moves that would make the late great Michael Jackson jealous in a mammoth stage production that included more special-effects bells and whistles than a summer blockbuster.

Usher opened the performance with "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," perched two flights above the stage on a ledge surrounded by blinding green laser lights. Then he slid, with the help of barely visible wires and mounts, down a flight, all the while popping and locking. When the father of two finally ticked his way down to stage level, he was surrounded by an army of dancers also clad in black suits with white stripes designed to toss and catch special effect lights.

Directed by Anthony Mandler, Usher's "OMG" clip earned Best Male Video, Best Dance Music Video and Best Choreography Moonman nominations. During the pre-show, Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" beat it in the Best Dance category, where Raymond was, for many, the lead contender.

If Usher was disappointed, he didn't let it show. When he launched the "OMG" portion of his performance, the stage seemed to disappear, as red laser lights moved forward in blinding configurations spelling out O.M.G. and Usher's name. More dancers lowered from the ceiling on Cirque du Soleil-esque contraptions, dipping in and out of the red beams. Such a 3-D light display could probably have been seen from the moon, if it weren't for the roof of the Nokia Theatre.

Usher ended his set standing, head back, with his arms outstretched in the Jesus pose. He didn't say a word. Didn't need to.

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

Usher Shows Off Fancy Footwork At AMAs

Swedish House Mafia join Ush for an electronic mash-up.

Usher's protégé, Justin Bieber, scored more hardware than the "OMG" singer on Sunday night (November 21) at the 2010 American Music Awards, but the veteran superstar was far from a step behind the teen sensation.

With his fleet footwork, Usher teamed up with dance-world superstars Swedish House Mafia to ignite the stage with a mash-up of his "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and their "Miami 2 Ibiza" and "One" that certainly qualified as one of the evening's high points. Decked out in black military garb and sporting a starter mohawk, Usher partied and pranced around onstage to his club-happy single.

"I feel like a zombie gone back to life," Usher sang. "Hands up, and suddenly we all got our hands up/ No control of my body/ Ain't I seen you before?/ I think I remember those eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes."

Usher and his gang of dancers showed off moves that would have tripped up teen stars. At one point, his backup dancers launched him into the air and Usher landed and jumped right into his next step.

A full explosion followed behind him and he carried the energy into the hook.

" 'Cause baby tonight, the DJ got us falling in love again," he crooned. "Yeah, baby tonight/ The DJ got us falling in love again/ So dance, dance, like it's the last, last night of your life, life."

After picking up an award earlier in the evening, Usher acknowledged his veteran status. The 32-year-old thanked his supporters, plugged his OMG Tour with Trey Songz and shouted out longtime fans. "I been doing this 18 years," he said.

What did you think about Usher's performance? Tell us in the comments!

Usher Most Admires Justin Bieber's 'Excitement And Innocence'

Bieber's mentor tells MTV News the teen sensation has 'so much more in store for the future.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash

With so much accomplished in 2010, Justin Bieber has certainly set the bar high for 2011. But the teen singer is already gearing up for next year. Bieber will not only release his much-anticipated 3-D flick, "Never Say Never", but he has also teased that he'd like to release an album of all-new material sometime later next year.

His mentor, Usher, thinks that at this point, the sky's the limit.

"As far as music and entertainment, that's the beginning," Usher told MTV News at Sunday's AMAs, where Bieber performed and took home four awards.

"There's so much more in store for the future, or at least there's a ton of things we can do and will, and with the support of his fans who will continue to just grow and grow and grow."

At 16, Bieber has accomplished what few manage with many more years in the music business, but Usher said he wants to ensure that Bieber doesn't stop enjoying it all as his popularity continues to grow and his schedule gets busier.

Asked what he admires most about Justin, Usher said, "His excitement and innocence in it. And I don't mean that in a light way because I think that he's absolutely enjoying every moment of it, as any young man his age would, but in a different way because [of] the hard work that has gone in and led to the dream that has become a reality. And every time you have an opportunity do something incredible, I tell him to do his best and be conscious that what you're doing today should last forever and eternity."

Beyonce Says She Takes Pregnancy Rumors In Stride

'I just hope that one day, when I decide to be pregnant that people are happy for me,' superstar jokes about year-round bump-watch.
By Jocelyn Vena

In 2010 alone, Beyoncé was pregnant at least twice, if you believe the rumors.

While the singer shot down the talk both times, she says that at this point she's pretty much to used to people speculating about potential baby bumps. "I mean, it's a part of it. At this point they said I've been pregnant like eight times, so I'm kind of used to it," Beyoncé told MTV News at a screening for her concert DVD, "I Am ... World Tour," in New York City.

"I just hope that one day, when I decide to be pregnant that people are happy for me, 'cause I'm like gosh, like, everyone's like, 'Oh god, please! She's been pregnant 100 times.' One day, hopefully, I will be. So whatever; it's a part of being a celebrity, I guess."

Her mom, Tina Knowles, was also at the screening and when asked if she thought that 2011 might be the year we give up gossiping about Bey's pregnancy status, she played it cool. "You have to ask her those personal things," she said. "I don't know!"

But Tina was also the lady to shoot down the baby-bump rumors last month when she sat down with talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres.

"I heard that, but I'm here to clear the rumors up. The truth is it's not Beyoncé that's pregnant, it's me," she joked. "No, it's not true. Not right now. I'm looking forward to it. With all the rumors, by now I should have about five or six grandchildren."

What do you think of the constant speculation about Bey and a baby bump? Tell us in the comments!

Britney Spears 'Glee' Episode Takes On '... Baby One More Time'

Lea Michele dons Brit's naughty schoolgirl look for a faithful cover of the 1998 hit.
By Aly Semigran

Lea Michele performs "... Baby One More Time" on "Glee" on Tuesday
Photo: FOX

It was the song that launched the career of one of the most beloved, albeit troubled, pop stars of the past decade. Its iconic video spawned a modern-day "Lolita" and earned the title of #1 first favorite video on "TRL." So, of course, Britney Spears' 1998 smash "... Baby One More Time" was an obvious choice for Tuesday night's episode of "Glee."

While general-anesthesia-induced hallucinations had another Brittany (Heather Morris) tackling "Me Against the Music" and "I'm a Slave 4 U," star Lea Michele took on the timelessly catchy "...Baby One More Time." As Michele mimicked Spears' naughty schoolgirl look, the instantly recognizable opening notes pounded on the piano (though the "Glee" version had a slight change of key). With her throaty "Oh bay-buh, bay-buh," Michele effortlessly channeled the song (surprisingly enough, she sounded downright restrained) that made the former "Mickey Mouse Club" member a superstar.

It's fitting that "Glee" paid homage to the song that is but a few weeks away from celebrating its 12th anniversary. (Go on and take a moment to absorb that information.) "... Baby One More Time," the first single of Spears' debut album of the same name, was released in the United States in late October 1998.

Of course, it could have all sounded very different if writer Max Martin had followed through with his original plan to have R&B heavyweights TLC sing the track. The song was also originally titled "Hit Me Baby One More Time" but was changed due to concerns about it being misinterpreted.

In Spears' capable 16-year-old pigtails, the single went on to sell over 9 million copies, garnered Spears her first Grammy nomination (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, which she lost to Sarah McLachlan for "I Will Remember You") and reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The rest of the album featured other Spears hits, including "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and "Sometimes," but neither of those songs left quite the same impact.

Spears told Blender — which placed the track at the #9 spot on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born" — that the song wasn't an easy undertaking for her at first (of course, neither was the immense fame that followed). Spears revealed, "I didn't do well at all the first day in the studio. I was just too nervous. So I went out that night and had some fun. The next day I was completely relaxed and nailed it. You gotta be relaxed singing '... Baby One More Time.' "

Spears looked more than at ease during awards show appearances that followed, namely the 1999 VMAs, in which the leather-clad pop princess took the stage alongside her tourmates 'NSYNC for a "... Baby One More Time"/ "Tearin' Up My Heart" showstopper.

Of course, long before the folks at "Glee" took "... Baby One More Time" out for a spin, countless other musicians had already had at it. From punk rock (Simple Plan) to acoustic (Travis), Spears' song has been refashioned (albeit, sometimes ironically) in many genres. Take, for instance, Bowling for Soup's cover of the ditty, which wound up on Bowling for Soup Goes to the Movies. And even Jamie Lee Curtis and Chad Michael Murray took a crack at it in the 2003 film "Freaky Friday."

What did you think of the "Glee" covers of Britney's songs? Share your reviews in the comments.

Ugly Betty Actor Michael Brea Kills Mother with Sword

Ugly Betty Actor Michael Brea Kills Mother with Sword

In one of the more bizarre and disturbing news stories, it has been reported that New York City actor Michael Brea (who appeared on the television series Ugly Betty, as well as this year's Step Up 3D) murdered his own mother, Yanick Brea, with a sword.

The New York Daily News reports that 31-year-old Brea killed his 55-year-old mother on Tuesday morning after he thought she was possessed by the devil. Police were called to Yanick's Brooklyn apartment after neighbors heard her screams. "Her screams woke me up. Screams I'll never forget," one neighbor said. Another neighbor said they heard Michael, as well, and claimed he was yelling, "Sinner! Sinner!" and "You never accepted Jesus!"

When police removed Michael (who was allegedly wearing "fire and brimstone" attire and clutching a bible) from the scene, it was already too late for Yanick (who had worked at the Marriott World Trade Center and survived the 9/11 attacks). She was found dead from multiple stab wounds. The weapon was said to be a "Masonic ceremonial sword."

Neighbors and family members now question whether the horrific crime could have been prevented all together if measures had been taken earlier. One resident told the NYDN, the police, "just kept saying protocol this and protocol that. Now a woman's dead who should be alive if only the police would have listened." Yanick's brother Serge Mercel told the paper, "To think my sister was inside, crying for her life, and the police that are supposed to be protecting her are standing at the door. It's enough to make me sick."

But, the NYPD assure the incident was handled properly. NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the New York Daily News: "It's a barricaded situation and that is handled by the Emergency Services Unit. What happens in a barricade situation is that responding patrol officers, if possible, wait for the Emergency Services forces to arrive." An NYPD spokeswoman added, "This was necessary protocol, because the person appeared dangerous to himself and the officers."

While Michael, who had no previous arrests, has not been officially charged, police told TVGuide.com that Brea is a "person of interest" in the murder.

Leave your condolences for the friends and family of Yanick Brea below.

Jeremy Renner Talks Breakout Year, 'Mission: Impossible' And 'Avengers'

'Hurt Locker' star is one of the actors we're most thankful for in 2010.
By Eric Ditzian

This time of year puts MTV News into a thankful spirit, as we look back at the actors and filmmakers whose work has kept our hearts warm through the winter months and has made us sweat with joy during the summer season. And so each year, we give our thanks.

In the past, we've feted Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Reynolds and Quentin Tarantino. Thankful Week 2010 kicks off with a chat with Jeremy Renner, because his accomplishments over the past 12 months are not only impressive, but richly deserved.

This year, his breakout turn in "The Hurt Locker" landed him at the Oscars with a Best Actor nomination, one of nine the Iraq war flick nabbed. Casting directors soon came a-calling. Having already signed up for Ben Affleck's "The Town" (a role that led to some early Oscar buzz once again), Paramount tapped Renner to star alongside Tom Cruise in the resurrection of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. And this summer, the 39-year-old found himself at Comic-Con, standing besides the likes of Downey and Samuel L. Jackson, after being cast as Hawkeye in "The Avengers," Marvel Studios' upcoming superhero all-star flick.

Mission, accomplished. These days, Renner is stationed in Dubai, where's he's pulling wicked stunts alongside Cruise in "Mission." During a break from shooting, he called up MTV News to chat about his crazy year, his current production and why he's so excited to get busy with "Avengers."

MTV: Congratulations on the stellar year. You start off the year with an Oscar nomination, you're in "The Town," you land "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" and "The Avengers." Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you?

Jeremy Renner: Over the last 20 years, it certainly is one of the bigger ones. It's been a tremendous year. I feel very lucky in some ways and ready in other ways. I couldn't be more blessed. I'm just excited to get to work.

MTV: You'd been around and respected in the industry for a while, but you hadn't notched that true breakout role until "Hurt Locker." Were you starting to think it wasn't going to happen?

Renner: Well, I felt pretty happy over the decade working so much and getting to do some great films. It's just to be able to do more and stretch and grow as an artist. It never felt like there was a timeline. I was ecstatic about where I was over the last 10 years. I'm almost 40, but I don't look 40, and I don't play 40, and I'm not going to for a while!

MTV: Has there been one surreal point over the last year that kind of encapsulates everything for you?

Renner: That's almost every day, brother, for the last year. I say to my friends, "Is this real? Is this really happening?" I constantly pinch myself, because I can't believe I'm in Dubai shooting "Mission: Impossible." I embrace all of it, even the negative things that come along with this success.

MTV: What's been negative?

Renner: I'm a pretty private individual, and I like to stay private. And I'm pretty free-spirited and pretty giving, and I get taken advantage of, just being too nice sometimes. It's nice to go to Starbucks for a coffee, but it gets difficult when you have to have 19 conversations to get a cup of coffee. People are usually very respectful, but sometimes I don't want to chat. It's a wonderfully high-class problem. I just have to be conscious of what I do and what I say and where I go. I have to be careful about speaking off the cuff. I do have a mouth on me.

MTV: I imagine standing up at Comic-Con next to all those guys was fairly surreal. What was going through your head at that point?

Renner: That's bananas. That's bananas for everybody, for Robert Downey and Sam Jackson. You can never get used to that unless you're Bono. Maybe he's not used to that. It's a strange thing, having 7,000 people scream at you, whether they love you or they hate you. I don't know, it could have been half and half.

MTV: Come on, the fans have embraced you!

Renner: Yeah, I'm pretty lucky about that. But it's intense!

MTV: What's been the biggest difference for you professionally since "Hurt Locker"? Is there less for you to prove in auditions? Are you getting the offers you didn't before?

Renner: Not having to prove anything — that's been around for a while. Within the industry, that awareness has been around, which has been great. But now things happen faster and they happen more frequently. I'm attached now to big franchise movies. "Mission: Impossible" happened so quickly. And then "The Avengers." This is going to be the next 10 years of my life. That's strange, because I'm used to moving on and going to the next movie.

MTV: And now you're hanging out with Tom Cruise in Dubai.

Renner: I go to work, and I can't wait to learn from him. I just got to see a little teaser reel from the first couple months I've been filming. It was crazy.

MTV: What's the craziest stunt you've had to do?

Renner: Everything. I haven't gotten to work too much in terms of acting stuff, but the stunts have been insane. Tom has been doing loads. He's crazy, that guy. It's unbelievable. He's fearless. He's great to watch. He inspires me to want to be better. I'm training in the gym and working out and fighting and doing everything I can to try and keep up. I'm doing hand-to-hand combat, Muay Thai and kung fu and learning how to take someone out quickly. I need to look like I know what I'm doing!

MTV: Well, we're very thankful that "Mission" is coming back, and we're very, very thankful "Avengers" is finally happening.

Renner: I was just texting with Downey before I called you.

MTV: Has there been a lot of communication between all you guys?

Renner: We did a creative meeting with everyone months ago before everyone took off. We met with [director] Joss [Whedon] and the cast and Marvel, just in terms of the script and where we want it to go. It was a little powwow. It feels like a very collaborative effort. Right now we're off and dividing and conquering, but soon we'll link up and get the rest of the guys and work on that. I'm very thankful for everyone I get to work with. It's a tremendous time in my life.

Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it's about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long.

Nearly a decade in and "Harry Potter" filmgoers can't get enough — a fact which was proved by the massive box-office showing of the latest flick in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1."

Powered by a $24 million haul from the movie's midnight showings, which was the third highest midnight-screening debut of all time, the film netted $61.1 million on Friday. Fans sporting "Potter" garb and brandishing pretend wands have swarmed theaters, and experts predict that the penultimate installment in the series could ring up over $100 million its debut weekend.

Action junkies were still able to get their fix at theaters with "Unstoppable," which arrived in second place on Friday. Denzel Washington and Chris Pine's locomotive-themed adventure pulled down a little over $4 million dollars. The film's haul now stands at around $33 million as the thriller kicks off its second weekend on screens.

Third-place flick "Megamind" was hot on the heels of "Unstoppable." The comedian-packed animated hit scored $3.7 million as the flick, which stars Will Ferrell and Tina Fey, headed into the weekend. The movie's total estimated haul is skyrocketing toward $100 million, with $97 million picked up since its debut in early November.

Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr.'s cross-country trek "Due Date" continued to cruise along in the top five. Audiences handed over $2.9 million Friday to check out the odd couple's journey to deliver Downey's character in time for the birth of his child. The Friday figure kicks the movie's estimated haul to around $66 million.

"The Next Three Days" opened in fifth place on Friday. Russell Crowe's turn as a determined husband who plots to spring his wife — played by Elizabeth Banks — from jail scored $2.2 million on screens.

Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1," "Unstoppable" and "Megamind."

Michael Jackson's New Single, 'Breaking News,' Teased in Video

A 42-second promo for posthumous track, to be released Monday, appears on King of Pop's official website.
By James Dinh

With a title that plays perfectly into the controversy that surrounded Michael Jackson's career, the lead single, "Breaking News," off the King of Pop's first posthumous album, Michael, is set to premiere Monday. Fans who'd like a preview might want to head to the singer's official website: A 42-second trailer has been posted for the never-before-heard track.

The video teaser, which appears below a "Breaking News" headline, begins with a slew of reporters announcing: "As the plot thickens to destroy Michael Jackson ..."

The camera then pans between Sony televisions screens, all showing media reports on the late singer. The montage intensifies as the screens flicker, one after another, until the rumble of reporters is silenced with a thud and a voice-over announcing a breaking news story.

The teaser concludes with flashing text displaying Monday's world premiere date for the new single, then showing cover art for the new album. The instrumental music playing in the background may be from the song "Breaking News." While no vocals are present on the dance-tune snippet, the pop star's signature croon ends the video.

According to a press release, the entire new song will stream on the singer's website for one week. The track, which was recorded in 2007, was recently completed by the producers of Jackson's posthumous album, Michael. The LP is scheduled to hit stores December 14.

It has been reported that Jackson was continuously creating music until his death in 2009.

"The creative process never stopped for the King of Pop, who was always planning for his next album; unbeknownst to many fans around the world, Michael Jackson was writing and recording songs continuously everywhere from a friend's home in New Jersey to studios in Las Vegas and Los Angeles with a small group of handpicked collaborators," the press release says.

Lady Gaga Says Born This Way Is Nearly Finished, 'Almost Perfect'

'It won't be much longer, it's almost perfect. But I (we) don't want almost,' Gaga tweets about forthcoming album.

By now, you are probably aware that Lady Gaga's upcoming Born This Way album is "incredible," "shocking," "bold and beautiful," "utter liberation," and, of course, "crazy amazing."

But what you might not have known is that it is finally, totally, completely finished. Almost.

That's according to Gaga herself, who took to her Twitter account on Wednesday to announce that she's nearly wrapped production on Born, and that her little monsters' long wait is just about over. Unless she's not satisfied with every last detail, of course.

"Endless melodies, hooks [and] poetry sledge-hammering my skull," she tweeted. "It won't be much longer, it's almost perfect. But I (we) don't want almost."

Of course, there's still no release date (tentative or otherwise) for Born This Way, though Gaga has been playing songs from the album — like "You And I" and "Living on the Radio" — since the summer, and has discussed the project at length during her Monster Ball performances. In September, at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, she announced the title of the album after winning Video of the Year.

Those who have heard Born This Way can't seem to stop gushing over it. On Tuesday, MTV News caught up with Gaga's label boss, Akon, who said the album "is definitely ... a notch up" from her previous work, and that she's "taking things to the next level."

Gaga's manager, Troy Carter, said that he's just starting to play music from Born for Interscope Records, and that the songs on the album are "incredible." He also hinted that the album would be "coming soon."

Sorry, Snooki! Cher Explains Why She Hates Reality TV

Sorry, Snooki! Cher Explains Why She Hates Reality TV

Cher is one of the greatest pop culture icons of the past 50 years. So what does she think of the pop culture icons of 2010? In a new interview with 20/20, the singer-actress admits that she doesn't understand the appeal of reality stars like Snooki and Kim Kardashian.

"I kind of like people that do something, that are not just famous for -- I'm not sure what," the reclusive star tells ABC News anchor Cynthia McFadden. (Watch the clip below!)

"What I know about the Kardashians you could put on the head of a pin and still have room for the Lord's prayer," Cher says when asked about the fame-hungry family. "I know nothing about them."

As for Snooki, Cher says she once got a bobblehead doll of her in a swag bag -- but she's not at all interested in her show.

"My sister was telling me about these New Jersey kids," says the 62-year-old performer. "And the way she was describing it was so horrible, I thought, why would I want to (see that)?"

It's pretty funny to see the mega-talented Cher so baffled by our national love of untalented reality stars. But she admits that once upon a time, there was one reality show that she actually enjoyed!

"A long time ago I used to watch this really sweet reality show called Jon and Kate Plus Eight," Cher says. "And then I leave the country for six months, I come back and the whole thing has just blown up in everyone's face, and I just thought, well, this is not what I signed up for. And I thought it was sweet. I liked the babies."

So did we, Cher. So did we.

The full Cher interview airs Friday night on 20/20. The Oscar-winning actress is promoting Burlesque, which hits theaters on Nov. 24 and marks her first major film role in over a decade.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber Light Up EMA Show

Powerhouse performances abound at Eva Longoria-hosted event.

Live from the home of the current World Cup champions, the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid, Spain, which airs Sunday night (November 7) at 9 p.m. ET at MTV2 and Friday night at 9 p.m. ET on MTV, was a winning night for pop music. Stars like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ke$ha and more picked up trophies and shut down the stage at the city's Caja Magica venue.

Host and "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria kicked off the show, heralded by bursts of fog and pyro as a slinky silhouette appeared, James Bond style, in the middle of the stage's huge circular set piece. However, instead of completing the entrance with some insanely agile spy move, the Latina diva gracefully strolled onto another part of the stage in a vampy brown number, quipping that the silhouetted woman was a stand-in, and that she didn't want to ruin her dress. The moment set the tone for the night, which was chock-full of copious amounts of pyrotechnics, show-stopping fashion and elaborately executed performances.

The big moments really began before the main event when hip-hop superstar (onetime EMA stage-crasher)) Kanye West surprised fans during 30 Seconds to Mars' preshow gig. The MC hit the stage for his 30STM collabo "Hurricane," and then rocked a brief rendition of "Power." 30STM also took home the award for Best Rock.

Colombian powerhouse Shakira was the first to shake things up on the main stage, shimmying in fringed bottoms for her jam "Loca" with UK spitter Dizzee Rascal. Then the superstar, who also won the Free Your Mind award for her humanitarian efforts, aptly launched into the World Cup anthem "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" as enormous flags were waved through the air.

Southern rockers Kings of Leon turned in an epic performance of "Radioactive" that rivaled the grand scale of the Caja Magica. The crew brought an energy to the show that was different from a lot of the acts, showcasing their performance chops instead of tinkering with fussy theatrics.

Newlywed Katy Perry was the polar opposite, heaping tons of firepower onto her set, and dazzling fans with her first post-wedding, awards-show performance. Performing "Firework" outdoors at the city's Puerta de Alcala stage, the singer, who also took home Best Video for "California Gurls," donned a glittery catsuit and belted the single among the raging bursts of pyrotechnics.

Rihanna recreated the summery vibe of her "Only Girl (In the World)" video by dotting the stage with several daisies, kicking off the song seated atop a pedestal in a white bustier. Rocking a bejeweled crown and flower-laden skirt, the singer switched up the energy when the chorus dropped as several guys in suits filled the stage and chucked confetti from briefcases.

Miley Cyrus channeled her inner vamp in a lacy leotard and tons of hair flips for her rendition of "Who Owns My Heart." She was flanked by ladies who were also decked out in lingerie looks and fellas grooving in suits.

Ke$ha hit the stage in Day-Glo face paint for a revamped version of "Tik Tok," which featured a house music-friendly breakdown. The Best New Act winner pumped up the eye-popping performance with tons of bouncing balls and otherworldly-looking dancers.

Like Perry, Linkin Park took their performance of "Waiting for the End" outside to the Puerta de Alcala stage, crooning to a mass of Spanish fans waving their fists in the air as the band rocked the A Thousand Suns single. The band had accepted the award for Best Live Act earlier in the show before lighting up the stage.

B.o.B and Hayley Williams of Paramore, which won Best Alternative, teamed up for their hit collabo, "Airplanes." The Atlanta spitter and the rock frontwoman performed the ethereal hit as giant balloons rained from the ceiling, and were tossed around by audience members.

Even though Lady Gaga couldn't physically attend, due to her show in Budapest, the pop sensation accepted her three trophies for Best Pop, Best Song and Best Female in her signature outrageous getups live from her Hungary performance.

Other winners included Eminem for Best Hip-Hop, Tokio Hotel for Best World Stage Performance and Marco Mengoni for Best European Act. Bon Jovi, who received the Global Icon award, closed the show with the final performance of the night.

The 2010 EMAs will air on MTV2 on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, and an edited, performance-heavy version will be broadcast Friday, November 12, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Judge Praises Chris Brown: "No One Has Done a Better Job Than You"

Ever since his domestic abuse scandal with Rihanna, Chris Brown has gotten used to receiving criticism. So it was a definite change of pace when the pop star was praised  by a judge Thursday, when he appeared in a Los Angeles court to give a progress report on his probation.

"Of all the probationers I have had, no one has done a better job, or been more consistent than you. You are working diligently," Judge Patricia Schnegg told Brown, who was sentenced in August 2009 for the assault of former girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown was sentenced to serve five years probation and to spend more than 1,400 hours in "labor-oriented service." He still has seven more sessions of domestic violence counseling and, to date, has completed 581 hours of community labor.

The singer will remain on probation and is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 28 for another progress report.
