Comedian Greg Giraldo, who died last week at age 44, was laid to rest in a private family ceremony in the Hamptons on Monday, following which many of his celeb friends gathered for a wake in his honor.
Jon Stewart, Chris Rock and Sarah Silverman were among those who attended the wake, according to a TMZ report. The mood was said to be "very sad and emotional." Other comedians in attendance included Jeff Ross, Bobby Kelly, Jim Norton and Colin Quinn, who reportedly delivered an emotional speech about Giraldo.
According to reports, Giraldo suffered an accidental prescription-drug overdose and was hospitalized in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was said to have collapsed in his hotel room in New Jersey, where he was performing at a comedy club. He was discovered by friends and rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He died with his family by his side on September 29.
In the days since Giraldo's death, his friends have paid tribute to the comedian, who was a frequent presence on Comedy Central and appeared often on talk shows like "Late Show With David Letterman."
"Greg Giraldo was a great and funny man," Jimmy Kimmel tweeted. Said Dane Cook, "Greg Giraldo may you RIP. My thoughts & prayers go to his family, friends & fans."
On Friday, other friends held a tribute and benefit show for Giraldo at the Governor's Comedy Club in Levittown, New York, raising $3,000 in support for Giraldo's family. "We wanted to celebrate his life," club owner Marc Lund told us. "A lot of comics use this as a release."
